Tambakrejo Village

 

Tambakrejo Village is located in the Malang Regency of East Java Province, Indonesia. Tambakrejo is one of the village with high tsunami risk in the South Java coast. The risk is due to the active subduction zone between the Indo-Australian Plate and the Eurasian Plate in the South Java Sea. A 7.8 Mw Earthquake and tsunami that happened on midnight June 3, 1994, in Banyuwangi in the South Sea of East Java. The tsunami impacted the coast of Tambakrejo village. The tsunami inundated the Tamban beach going approximately 300-500 m inland and destroyed more than 30 houses on the beach. Recognizing this tsunami hazard, the Tambakrejo Village Administrative Government made efforts to reduce disaster risk and to mitigate the disaster.

In collaboration with the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, Geophysics (BMKG) the Local Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Malang District, the Village Disaster Risk Reduction Forum (Forum Pengurangan Risiko Bencana – FPRB) of Tambakrejo have been working to meet the 12 UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Indicators. In 2015, the Tambakrejo Village was destined as Disaster Resilient Village (Desa Tangguh Bencana - DESTANA) by BNPB. In 2022, the Tambakrejo Village has been declared a National Tsunami Ready Community by the National Tsunami Ready Board (NTRB) based on the 12 UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready indicators.

As part of the tsunami disaster risk reduction the Tambakrejo is very keen to receive the recognition as one of the UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Community also in 2022.
