12 September 2007, Mw 8.4, Southern Sumatra, Indonesia

 

This earthquake (12 September, 11:10  UTC, 6:10 pm local time) occurred off the southern coast of Sumatra about 130 km (85 miles) from Bengkulu Sumatra, at 4.517°S, 101.382°E with a preliminary depth of 30 km (19 miles). It was a major earthquake with a magnitude of 8.4, felt over a large area. A tsunami of 2.2 m has been measured at Padang Indonesia. It will be several hours before the major impact of the earthquake and tsunami impact the coastline will be known, given the darkness of nighttime since the earthquake happened.
